This family includes instruments which are made of brass, and the player blows air inside them in order to produce a tone. They are in fact wind instruments.
Usually, a bigger instrument produces a lower sound. In these instruments, the length of tubing and crooked shapes also determines the instrument's register.
Brass instruments have different types of mouthpieces
and bores, which influence the tone quality. A brass instrument plays the
harmonic series
natural to its length. Additional series of tones are made available by
the use of crooks, slides, or valves.
The brass family includes the trumpet,
trombone,
French horn
and tuba,
which are commonly used in the symphony orchestra,
and the sousaphone,
cornets
and bugles which are also included in the brass band.
