The Violin (fiddle)
Nowadays,
the violin (also known as fiddle) is the smallest of the strings.
It is a descendant of an Arab
instrument called Rebab
that has one or two strings, compared to four
of the violin. Other than classical music,
the violin is among the most common instruments in many folk and ethnic
styles, including American
folk music,
Arab music
and Jewish music (Klezmer).
Among the famous violinists in
history, we find Mozart,
who wrote five violin concertos
in six months in his youth; Vivaldi,
who was one of the best violinists of his time, and composed 230
concerti-solo
for the violin (including "The Four Seasons"),
and Paganini,
who was such an amazing virtuoso
player, that all his listeners believed he
had made a deal with the devil. He wrote 24
capriccio for violin, that were so difficult
to perform, that for many years only Paganini himself could play them.
In his violin
concerto Beethoven
integrates the solo violinist in the orchestra,
in a unique and unprecedented way. Another great composer, Mendelssohn,
composed the E minor concerto for violin and
orchestra
- of the best-loved works for violin.
