The octet is a group of 8 players or singers.
Although Schubert
wrote the Octet Opus 166 in F Major, D 803
for mixed ensembles of wind and strings, most octets were written for the
String Octet, which actually contains of 2 String
quartets .
Mendelssohn's
Octet for Strings Opus 20 in E flat ,
a brilliant work by a 16-year-old genius, is a good example of such composition.
Also common is the Wind Octet, usually with two each of oboes ,
horns ,
bassoons
and clarinets .
A few of Mozart's
finest serenades
were such.
