His fame rests on numerous fugues, toccatas and many partitas for the organ, and he was the organist of St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome. As one of the most important keyboard composers of the beginning of the baroque period, he advanced keyboard technique and exploited sophisticated and daring modulations.
