Notes & Pitch

In the past, music would be passed on from father to son, and learnt by heart. Since then, notation was invented and it assists in the writing down of music and its transmission from composer to performer.


Sound pitch is marked by the note's location on the staff.

The musical staff

This is the staff - the five-line row on which notes are written:

The clefs

The clefs show the pitch of central notes, and in this way the player can know the pitch of every note.

Every clef refers to a different region of sound (a register).


The G clef

The clef is used to indicate note pitches. According to the clef, we know what sound each notes stands for.

The G clef (the treble clef) shows the note g on the second line.

This clef is used by women singers and high-pitched instruments
