The Saxophone
This is an instrument which is
a hybrid of the woodwind
mouthpiece, the oboe-like
conic barrel, and a body that resembles that of the brass.
It was invented by the German
Adolph Sax in 1840, however was
not accepted into the symphonic orchestra,
except for several French
composers who integrated it in their work.
Composers like Debussy,
with his "Rhapsody for Saxophone and orchestra",
Bizet
in his "L'Arlesienne", and
Richard Strauss
in "Symphony Domestique" made use
of it, use that did not make it a true member of the "classic"
club of instrument.
In jazz,
however, it was welcomed, and it became one of the most important instruments
in this style.
Jazz players like Charlie Parker, the inventor
of Bebop,
Coleman Hawkins, Lester
Young, Sonny Rollins and young Michael
Breaker, brought this instrument fame and sympathy.
It is also a significant instrument in Rock
n' Roll
music, the saxophone is a significant instrument, and of power, being used
for energetic, expressive improvisations
here.
The saxophone family includes four main members: soprano,
alt,
tenor
and baritone.
