Concierto de Aranjuez
The
"Concierto de Aranjuez" is one of the most famous pieces in the
guitar repertory. Played by the best guitar players, it is colorful, melodic,
grand and airy - just like the Spanish tradition he brought into the concert
hall. This is one of the most popular pieces in classical music. 'Manuel
and the Mountains' orchestra' took it to the top of the pop charts in the
1970's, ahead of the pop hits of the time. It takes more than just a musical
talent for such an achievement (no other classical work has had such success).
The Spanish flamenco style is evident as early as in the first movement.
The rhythm switches (in a practice called Hemiola) give us the almost addictive
sensation of flamenco, that is as if sweeps you off your feet. The atmosphere
is colorful as a street feast in Spain. Musical odors of dancing and playing
are transmitted with every note and beat.
In the moving second movement, comes the all-time-famous tune that inspired
many jazz and pop artists. The melody feels like melancholy singing (by
the English horn), accompanied by the guitar.
The third movement is energetic and active, ending this beautiful concerto
and gives the guitar one of its so few symphonic masterpieces. Rodrigo
is the one who released the guitar from its recital isolation and shifted
it to the concert hall with grace, style and enthusiasm.
