Bergen became the capital of Norway in the
13th century and was the largest city in the country for the next 600 years.
Bergen is famous for its spectacular setting beside the famous Fjords -
Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord and Geirangerfjord.
Edvard Grieg
lived in the house on Troldhaugen
with his wife Nina from 1885 until his death in 1907. Bergen is a city
in South West Norway,
on the Atlantic Ocean, and Troldhaugen is not far from Bergen. After Griegs
death, Nina only spent a few weeks every summer at Troldhaugen. In 1919
she sold the house.
In the salon of the house you will see Edvard's Steinway
grand-piano.
It was a gift from friends for the couple's Silver-wedding, and it is still
used for concerts in the villa. You may also see the small cabin where
Grieg used to compose his music. Not far from
there, in a little cave in the rock, 5 meters above the ground, lays the
grave of Edvard & Nina Grieg, facing the water.
Every year, in late May and early June, Bergen holds its
International Music Festival
which attracts performers and events from all over the world.
