Born: 15 June 1843, Bergen,
Norway Grieg, Edvard Hagerup The famous Norwegian composer did everything for the promotion of Norway's national music, and based his work on elements of traditional music. Although his Piano Concerto in A minor was highly successful, his glory was given to him by the "Peer Gynt" suites for Henric Ibsen's play, commissioned by Ibsen himself and the Norwegian government. He became a national figure, and the Norwegian government provided him with a regular salary, so he could become totally available for composition. His expertise was piano miniatures (tiny pieces), national in their character, with names such as "Norwegian Mountain Melodies" and "Two Nordic Melodies". Grieg on the WWW
