The cello, or in its full name
- the violoncello, is of warm sounds, reminding one of the human voice
with its deep notes. It has played bass parts
ever since the 17th century, when it played the "basso
continuo"
accompaniment style - the early form of harmony.
Cello repertory was contributed
to by Bach,
with six cello suites,
and Saint-Saëns,
who used it to describe the swan in "The
Carnival of the Animals",
and Haydn,
with the cello concerto in C.
Elgar's
E minor concerto for cello, Op. 85,
is one of the most beautiful works for this instrument, and the world remembers
the performance of the late cellist Jacqueline
DuPre, who was identified with this piece.
