Austria
Austria was the undoubted queen
of the musical world from the Classical period
until the early 20th century.
Austria, that produced Mozart,
(who was born in Salzburg),
Viennese
born Schubert
and revolutionary Schönberg,
was the center for many talented performers and composers, being an empire
that ruled a big part of Europe at its time, and it saw in the development
of arts, a blessed duty.
Vienna's centrality in the musical
world of the Romantic period caused the greatest of the composers, among
whom are Brahms,
Haydn
and Liszt,
to immigrate into the city. The Strauss
family that ruled the arena of Viennese dancing orchestras, strengthened
the waltz
as one of the most popular dances in the Western world. The Vienna
Philharmonic Orchestra, notoriously known for its male chauvinism and racism
(it did not accept any women or non-white musicians until very recently),
is considered one of the best orchestras in the world to this very day,
and the "Vienna Boy's Choir" is
most valued children's choir.
Dances originated in this country:
Waltz
- a 3/4 dance, popular since the late 19th century. Johann
Strauss Junior
was the greatest of the waltz writers.
